High Hopes: Citizenfour
If you, like me, enjoy an intelligent movie then I would highly recommend Citizenfour, the story of Edward Snowden and the NSA scandal.
In January 2013, Laura Poitras began receiving cryptic emails from Citizenfour, who suggested he had evidence of a spying conspiracy conducted by the NSA in collaboration with other agencies around the world. Several months later she travelled to Hong Kong with journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill for the first of many meetings with the whistleblower who turned out to be Edward Snowden.
Hotly tipped for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category, reviews of Citizenfour include Spencer Ackerman in The Guardian: “Citizenfour must have been a maddening documentary to film. Its subject is pervasive global surveillance, an enveloping digital act that spreads without visibility, so its scenes unfold in courtrooms, hearing chambers and hotels. Yet the virtuosity of Laura Poitras, its director and architect, makes its 114 minutes crackle with the nervous energy of revelation.”
